Foraging Habits of Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico

چکیده
Knowledge of green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ) foraging ecology in the northwestern Gulf Mexico (GOM) is critical as populations begin to recover from heavy harvesting prior centuries. We present a comprehensive long-term assessment diets carcasses salvaged 1987 2014 along Texas coast. Digestive tract contents were examined 420 turtles, ranging size 7.3 86.0 cm straight carapace length (SCL max ). Green turtles small 16.2 SCL recruit oceanic environment nearshore habitat GOM and consume macroalgae principally. A successive shift diet inshore seagrasses was evident by seagrass-dominated larger than 30 . Animal matter remained frequently ingested item suggesting these immature are better classified omnivores. The overall evidence indicates that Texas’ recovering assemblage exhibiting plasticity within seagrass meadows changing species composition density.

Migrations of Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) between Nesting and Foraging Grounds across the Coral Sea
Marine megafauna tend to migrate vast distances, often crossing national borders and pose a significant challenge to managers. This challenge is particularly acute in the Pacific, which contains numerous small island nations and thousands of kilometers of continental margins. The green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, is one such megafauna that is endangered in Pacific waters due to the overexploita...
متن کاملTesting dispersal hypotheses in foraging green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) of Brazil.
Testing theories of dispersal is challenging in highly migratory species. In sea turtles, population size, geographic distance, natal homing, and ocean currents are hypothesized to affect dispersal. Little is known, however, about these mechanisms in sea turtles foraging along the South American coast. Green sea turtles feeding at Ubatuba (UB, n = 114) and Almofala (AF, n = 117), Brazil, were s...
متن کاملSun Compass Orientation by Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas)
– Juvenile green turtles occupy home ranges on shallow reefs that parallel the southeastern coast of Florida. When disturbed, the turtles often flee eastward toward deeper water. We captured turtles at night and recorded their orientation during the next 2 days while they swam tethered inside a large circular outdoor pool and were exposed to the sun. The turtles from 2 reef sites were significa...
متن کاملHypothermic stunning of green sea turtles in a western Gulf of Mexico foraging habitat
Texas waters provide one of the most important developmental and foraging habitats for juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the western Gulf of Mexico, but hypothermic stunning is a significant threat and was the largest cause of green turtle strandings in Texas from 1980 through 2015; of the 8,107 green turtles found stranded, 4,529 (55.9%) were victims of hypothermic stunning. Additiona...
متن کاملHome ranges of East Pacific green turtles Chelonia mydas in a highly urbanized temperate foraging ground
Green sea turtles Chelonia mydas use coastal areas as foraging grounds for the majority of their lives. Human development of coastlines is increasing, but the effects of urban development of foraging grounds on green turtles are poorly understood. We used acoustic telemetry to determine home ranges of green turtles during 2009 to 2011 in San Diego Bay, California, USA, which is a highly urbaniz...
